Walking
Walking is probably the activity for which the Yorkshire Dales are best known. The area comprises of many dales (large valleys), which are dotted with small towns and villages. This structure means that walkers can be rewarded with a seemingly endless array of spectacular views, and tea shops every few miles. Written guides to writing have been produced for hundreds of years with pioneering walkers making and recording new routes that link villages with beautiful natural sites. Walking challenges are also popular in the area including the Three Peaks Walk (covering the three peaks of Penn y Ghent, Wernside and Ingleborough). Walking in the dales comes with its own polite code of conduct, if you come across a fellow but unknown walker on your journey, always be sure to say hello, it's the custom!
