West Yorkshire is a land-locked area and encompasses the most built-up and biggest urban area within the historic county boundaries of Yorkshire. Unlike the pastoral limestone valleys of the Yorkshire Dales, Bronte Country predominantly consists of Millstone Grit, a dark sandstone which gives the moor an air of remoteness. It is no coincidence that this landscape, which fuelled the imagination of the Bronte sisters in writing classic novels such as Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, has become so ingrained in the British psyche.
