Positioned on the north eastern fringe of the Yorkshire Dales National Park is the lovely market town of Richmond. Overlooking the town centre is the impressive Richmond Castle which dates back to the 11th century, around which the town originally grew. Anglers will love the fact that the picturesque River Swale runs right through the town centre. With its numerous shops, fine traditional inns and many excellent restaurants, all surrounded by beautiful countryside, Richmond is an ideal base for a short stay or even longer holiday. In addition to the weekly outdoor market there is a farmers market held once a month selling local produce. Each Sunday from Easter until the end of the holiday season there is a Craft and Collectors Fare held in the market hall. Always popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders there is a network of paths and bridleways around the town to explore. Just off the impressive Georgian market place is the fascinating Richmondshire Museum housing a collection of artefacts relating to the local area from the Stone Age to the present day. Those interested in military history should visit the Regimental Museum of the Green Howards where uniforms, medals and relics are on display. A mile to the east of the town on the banks of the River Swale are the interesting ruins of Easby Abbey, a great place to pause for a while during a stroll through the delightful countryside of Swaledale. Theatre lovers must make sure to visit Britain’s most complete Georgian playhouse, the Georgian Theatre Royal built in 1788.
