Situated on the southern edge of the Yorkshire Dales and known as the ‘Gateway to the Dales’ is the lovely market town of Skipton. Skipton Castle, overlooking the top of High Street is over 900 years old and one of the best preserved and complete castles in the country and well worth a visit. The town boasts many traditional pubs serving real ales and home cooked food. Take a relaxing cruise on the Skipton canal and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The Mart Theatre is the only theatre in the world that resides in a working cattle auction site, being used for selling cows during the week before transforming at the weekend into a 300 seat theatre. Located in the Town Hall the Craven Museum and Gallery has amazing displays of social history, art, archaeology and costume. For a relaxing swim visit Craven Swimming Pool in the town. The town is surrounded by wonderful walking and cycling country. The village of Malham is just a short drive away and is worth visiting to marvel at, and even climb up the stunning Malham Cove, a curved limestone cliff over 80 metres high. Those who enjoy horse riding or pony trekking should head for nearby Kilnsey Riding and Trekking Centre for a great day out. Other outdoor pursuits in the area include rock climbing, caving and potholing, paragliding and motor sports including the famous Harewood Hill Climb. Children will love visiting Hesketh Farm Park at nearby Bolton Abbey, where they can view and feed the animals.
