Swaledale Accommodation

Swaledale is one of the more northerly dales in the stunning Yorkshire Dales National Park. It is tranquil and unspoiled and is a delightful area to visit with its miles of moorlands covered in wild flowers and numerous waterfalls which tumble down the limestone landscape. This area is best known for its sheep farming and is perfect walking country, also widely enjoyed by cyclists and climbers who come here to take up their extreme sports or just to take in the amazing views from the hill tops. There are numerous paths and cycle ways leading across the dales and a number of villages to visit along the way. Buttertubs Pass is a well trodden route across the moors, leading to Wensleydale, where the creamy delight of Wensleydale cheese is made. The famous Coast to Coast walk passes along Swaledale and brings hundreds of visitors to take up the challenge each year. High on the hills above Keld stands the Tan Inn, famously the highest pub in England, where many a weary walker has been known to stop and take some well earned refreshment. The moors are filled with a vast variety of plants and wildlife, including numerous species of small mammals and birds. The many villages in the dales are well worth a visit and have unique shops, tea rooms and peaceful, cosy pubs to seek out. The colourful market town of Richmond is within easy reach and has plenty of shops, restaurants and of course the traditional market to visit. Swaledale holds its own annual festival during May and June, which runs for two weeks and encompasses old traditions with plenty of live music and a programme of local celebrations. The Swaledale sheep produce wonderful milk from which cheese used to be made, and the thick fleeces are spun into warm, rich wool.
