Full Description:
Barnard Castle is a bustling market town located on the site of an ancient River Tees ford originally created by the Romans. The A66 Trans Pennine road provides easy access from both the M6 motorway and the A1 trunk road.

The town was originally developed in the protective umbrella of a Norman fortress, Bernard Balliol’s castle, on the steep and superbly defensive sloping banks of the River Tees. The castle itself was constructed in 1125 and is now ain the caring hands of the English Heritage who open it on a regular basis to the public.

Visitors to the town can visit the Josephine and John Bowes French chateau style museum which boasts one of the UK’s finest art collections. The Butter Market located in the town centre had several uses in days gone by from operating as a dairy market, town hall, court house and jail.

Today Barnard Castle is a lively, thriving market town which offers a superb array of accommodation, eateries, shops, attractions, pubs and places of interest. It is a great place to holiday for a while and use as a base to explore the spectacular countryside including the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
