Egglestone Abbey
Barnard Castle, North Dales

Details for Egglestone Abbey

Egglestone Abbey at Barnard Castle stands proudly on a hilltop above the river. Some of the stunning architecture of this once grand abbey still remains, protected by English Heritage, to be admired and pondered over by visitors to the site.

Above the bend of the River Tees stand the remains of a 13th century church and its living quarters with believe it or not, traces of a drainage system.

The Abbey is situated in Durham close to Barnard Castle and 16 unmarked parking slots are available with a pay machine, other parking will be in Durham itself. The dog is welcome to enjoy the very nice walks that you can enjoy in and around the Abbey.  You can enjoy a cup of tea at the tearoom which includes toilets; both of these facilities are a welcome site not often found at historic places of interest.

A beautiful arched doorway still stands and it was the entrance into the nave of the south wall and the North and West walls of the nave are the only walls still standing and many tomb slabs are still in existence. The first church was built around 1200 and is full of interesting facts and features.

Visiting the Abbey will cost you nothing as admittance is free and is open for most of the year, closed for the Christmas and New Year holiday days so no excuse for not coming to pay a visit.

The Abbey is run by the English Heritage and they are always ready to welcome new members, without the members support, they can't always maintain the ruins, and so if you wish to join, you will find an application at Egglestone Abbey.

With Barnard and Bowes Castle within close proximity, you can have a very cultural day out.
