Wensleydale Tourist Information

Full Description:
Hawes is centrally located in the Yorkshire Dales National Park in Wensleydale, the largest and perhaps most well known of all the dales. With spectacular rolling countryside in all directions, Hawes is a haven for those seeking bird watching, walks, views and cycling, and a range of attractions and activities.

Hawes itself consists of quaint narrow streets containing; hotels, pubs, shops, guest houses and a variety of eateries. There is a glass blowing studio and pottery, and market day on Tuesdays each week attracts visitors and locals alike into the town from all round the region.

Wensleydale cheese of ‘Wallace and Grommet’ fame is made in the town, and a visit to the Wensleydale creamery, the largest employer in the region, caps off any visit. Visitors are able to see for themselves the actual production process from the milk right through to the finished article.

Also in the town is a rope maker, and visitors can see the production of various items including; halters, skipping ropes, church bell ropes and washing lines. A selection of items is also available in the shop.

The Dales Countryside Museum is also located in Hawes, and gives visitors the chance to see the distinct way of life within the dales. It is located in the former Station Yard and covers the history of railways in the dales, plus knitting, lead-mining, farming and numerous other local industries of days gone by.

The 250 mile Pennine Way footpath passes through Hawes. For the less energetic there are plenty more walks around that are a little more gentle on the feet.

Hardraw Force the largest single fall of water in England is located near to Hawes. The water cascades over and clears a rocky outcrop, and the brave visitor can actually go behind the falling water.
