Ideally situated between Lakes and Dales, the vibrant, thriving town of Kendal sits on the banks of the River Kent. Kendal offers more than a splendid market town with historic buildings, friendly people and an excellent selection of places to eat and drink.

Kendal is a beautiful old market settlement located in one of the most stunning parts of the country, the Lake District National Park. Kendal is also within 30 minutes drive of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, making it an ideal headquarters for walkers and sightseers alike. The town’s distinctive mix of history, culture and shopping make it a extremely well-liked destination for visitors.

Kendal offers more than a fine market town with historic buildings, friendly people and an excellent selection of places to eat and drink, plus a wide range of accommodation.

Within it's boundaries are a superb range of tourist attractions. Prize winning museums, outstanding shopping (including factory and speciality), a striking 13th Century Parish Church, colourful markets, exciting leisure and arts conveniences and an curious Tapestry and Reptile exhibition are all within easy walking distance of the centre of town.

It was a one of the country's main manufacturing towns from the 14th Century until the 19th Century, with many mills on the River Kent. The layout of the town is characterised by the narrow yards and lanes branching from the main street.

Alfred Wainwright, author of the famous guidebooks, was born in Blackburn, but lived in Kendal from 1941 until his death in 1991. The Tourist Information Centre in the Town Hall used to be his office when he was Borough Treasurer from 1947 until 1967.

For many years Kenda was one of the most important wool towns in the country, even more important than West Yorkshire
