Dating back to Medieval times the spectacular Markenfield Hall is open to the public and is a great attraction for tourists the North York Moors. Guided tours of the hall and the outbuildings around the walls can be organised for larger groups.
Markenfield Hall is a stunning medieval house, built around 1310, completely surrounded by a spectacular moat. It has hardly been altered since, and is the most complete surviving fourteenth century country house of its size left in England.
Markenfield is part of a very small group of medieval houses that can still be recognised by its building style, including thirteenth century Stokesay Castle in Shropshire and fifteenth century Nappa Hall in Wensleydale.
When built circa 1310, the main house seems to have had an outer moat and other defences, as well as the present moat. Only the upper parts of the house would have been seen above the gatehouse and its tall flanking walls.
Rarely open to the public until 2001, the hall can be visited by the public only on specified days or as part of an organised group at almost any other time.
The tour of the courtyard and house lasts approximately 1 and a half hours, and can easily be included in a larger itinerary to include Fountains Abbey, Ripon Cathedral or Norton Conyers - all of which Markenfield has been closely associated with for centuries.
The Hall can take “a coach-full” of visitors, but groups of over 35 will generally be split into two and shown around by two guides.
