Full Description: Masham is a market town based in the glorious dale of Wensleydale on the eastern side of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, close to Patley Bridge. The town has a huge central market square complete with Maypole and an ancient cross. Around the sides of the square are a fine range of hotels, shops and dignified dwellings, which adds to the superb ‘village’ atmosphere.

Around the 18th and 19th century Masham was the focal point for the regions regular sheep fair. Around 70,000 sheep and lambs would be brought on foot from Nidderdale, Wensleydale and Swaledale and put on sale. Gypsies would make camp on the banks of the River Ure and other buyers from all around the region and beyond would fill every possible Inn, cottage and spare room.

Today Masham is more famous for brewing beer, and Theakstons ‘Old Peculiar’ is world famous, for its taste an ability to put you flat on your back after a few pints! It is a superb beer named after the ‘Official of the Peculiar of Masham’, where a peculiar is a church parish that is exempt from the jurisdiction in which it lies, and had its own ‘peculiar Court’. If that is not enough to attract you to visit Masham then bear in mind there is also a second brewery in the town; The Black Sheep Brewery, which also ahs its world famous and delightful ‘Black Sheep’ beer.

Also located in Masham is St Mary’s 17 century Norman church. Other attractions in the area include Jervaulx and Fountains abbey plus Swinton castle.
