Full Description: This section is designed to give you a quick insight to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales.

Located in the North of England the Yorkshire Dales National Park which was established in 1954 stretches over 682 square miles of finest upland. For its outstanding landscape and natural features is has been designated an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)’. The local Yorkshire Dales inhabitants work in light manufacturing, farming and tourism the three main industries in the Dales today. The Yorkshire Dales National Park boasts some of England’s finest flora and fauna and offers the general public fantastic recreational opportunities. The Dales is such a diverse upland area which can be described as rugged, expansive and wild, yet peaceful, tranquil and picturesque.

The Yorkshire Dales landscape is made up of valleys known ‘dales’. Visitors are attracted to the area because of its outstanding natural beauty, which includes picture postcard villages, rolling countryside, gorges, caves and waterfalls. Some of the Dales not to be missed include: Wharfedale, Ribblesdale, Airedale, Swaledale, Nidderdale and Wensleydale. There are many more for the visitor to explore.

There is a wide range of accommodation in the Yorkshire Dales from caravans and campsites, farm houses and self catering cottages, to B&B’s and Hotels.

You will also be spoilt for choice in terms of eating out with a whole range of pubs, inns, tearooms, restaurants and cafes all serving top quality and reasonably priced ‘Yorkshire Grub’.

Activities
There is a wide range of activities for all tastes from walking, horse riding, fishing, cycling, and for the more adventurous potholing, hiking and caving, to name a few. One of the most popular walks in England Wainrights Coast to Coast Walk cuts right through the Dales, and the Three Peaks is also a magnet for walkers. There is plenty to entertain the whole family including historic and cultural sites, picnic areas, steam railways, parks – the list goes on. The Yorkshire Dales has it all and really is the ideal place for short breaks, holidays and day trips!

Attractions
The Yorkshire Dales boasts some great attractions including historic castles and abbeys, several nature reserves, cascading waterfalls, a steam railway and animal farms for families. The picturesque villages and towns have an abundance of shops and cafes set in quaint cobbled streets. A few of the most popular attractions include, Bolton Abbey, Aysgarth Falls and Stump Cross Caverns.

Settle-Carlisle Railway
The 72 mile famous Settle to Carlisle Railway runs right through the Dales. It passes over the 24 arches of the famous Ribblehead Viaduct then goes onto plunge into the tunnel on the Blea Moor line before emerging at Dentdale. The railway leaves the Dales at Garsdale and makes it way towards Eden Valley and arrives at the border of Carlisle.

Television and Film
The beautiful scenery and rugged countryside make the dales a magnet for TV and film directors. The area is famous for the TV programmes Emmerdale and ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. The films ‘Robin Hood Prince of Thieves’ and ‘Calendar Girl’ where also filmed in the Dales.
