Full Description: Thirsk is a traditional market town situated in North Yorkshire at the foot of the Hambleton Hills, in the beautiful Vale of Mowbray, and is famous for its horse racing course, Thomas Lord and fifteenth Century Church. Thirsk, and in particular cobbled market place, draws visitors throughout the year and dates back to medieval times and has been the centre of commercial activity ever since.

The famous vet and author the late James Herriot (Alf Wight) had his home at Thirsk. Hence, when a heritage centre was opened in his memory, it was only natural that it should be situated in his home town.

The heritage centre at number 23 Kirkgate was originally the private house and vetnary surgery of Alf Wight, who’s well known stories about his work in the local vicinity, became highly successful films and a long running television series. The centre which cost circa £1.5m to establish draws visitors from all over the world and is a fitting tribute to his eventful and colourful career.

Thirsk sits at the centre of the largest English county of North Yorkshire. It is a very well established market town and flourished for many years as a staging post between London and the North. Known as "Herriot Country" it is gateway to the both the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks, and is located approximately 20 miles north of the historic city of York.

Thirsk is a bustling market town with an array of amenities including: shops, a leisure/sports centre, pubs, restaurants, banks, post office cinema and of course horse racing.
