Thornton Steward Reservoir is fine fly fishery in Bedale. The compact reservoir is a tranquil site where the Felling Fly Fishing Club operates. The lake is well stocked with both rainbow and brown trout. Members, day and evening visitors are welcome 

Thornton Steward Reservoir is a fine fly fishing venue situated on Arklow Hill, close to the town of Middleham, in the village of Thornton Steward. Owned by Yorkshire Water, the reservoir is managed by Felling Fly Fishing Club who offer barbless hook fishing on both day and evening tickets, which can be purchased from the local Finghall Post Office, Gilsan Sports shop in Leyburn, Constable Burton Caravan Park and Crakehall Filling Station.

The reservoir is well stocked with brown trout and rainbow trout and is open from March to November between the hours of 8am and dusk, evening tickets are available from 4pm between May and August. The take limit is four fish, three fish for annual members.

Sailing is also a popular activity on Thornton Steward Reservoir which can get quite busy. During sailing club times fishing is confined to the western bank of the water for safety reasons and anglers are advised to avoid the pontoon and boat launch area. There is a private car park for anglers which must be used at all times.

Club rules include the strict control of waste and rubbish removal and any line, hooks, cans and plastic waste must be carefully taken home and not discarded as a hazard to the local wildlife around the reservoir.

Directions to Thornton Steward - from Masham follow the A6108 towards Middleham taking a right turn at Jervaulx Abbey. Cross Kilgram Bridge over the River Ure, turn left to Thornton Steward and take a right turn up...
