Cycling in the Yorkshire Dales

Get on your bike with this introduction to the Yorkshire Dales on two wheels!

Family Cycle Routes:
There are several dales which offer cycle routes away from the steep hills along quite roads which are suitable for most families with some cycling experience. A good starting point is the village of Grassington in Wharfedale.

Road Routes:
If you’re a more experienced road cyclist, there are many fantastic day routes to choose from in the Yorkshire Dale. Why not base yourself in one of the main villages and pick off a few routes over a weekend. Grassington and settles are easily accessible from the south, while Hawes or Reeth will take you to the heart of the northern dales.

Touring:
The Yorkshire Dales Cycle Way is ideal for many types of cyclists. Many will find it ideal for a pleasant six day tour. At 210km (130miles) long and taking in most of the major dales, the Yorkshire Dales Cycle Way is a great challenge for cycle tourists.

The Pennine cycleway from derby to Berwick on tweed passes through the southern and western part of the dales.

Mountain Biking:
If you fancy a bit more of a challenge then mountain biking in the Yorkshire Dales is the place for you. Difficult climbs and technical descents, all in isolated, untouched countryside.

Get hold of a map and get out there.

Away from the steep stuff, there’s also the opportunity to try something a smoother on a mountain bike as well.

Think before you ride:
The Dales can be a very quite environment once away from the main towns and villagers. So before you set of, make sure your bike is well maintained and that you’ve got tools and spares for an emergency stop.

There are many steep hills in the Dales, so it’s best to have a wide range of gears. Choose a route that suits your level of fitness and check your brakes are working!

Finally don’t forget food, drink, warm clothes and waterproofs!

Getting About by Public Transport:
A limited number of cycles can be carried on trains from Leeds/Bradford to Ilkley and Skipton and on the Settle-Carlisle line. On Sundays during the summer months there is a bike bus which travels from Leeds via Ilkley into Wharfedale.
