Quiet roads

The diverse landscape of the Yorkshire Dales, with all its hills and dales, bridleways and tracks is suitable for cyclists of all ages and experience. The quiet lanes are perfect for families and the rocky hill climbs are better suited to skilled mountain bikers.

If you love the great outdoors and have a sense of adventure, one of the best ways to experience the breathtaking countryside of the Yorkshire Dales is by cycle. There are countless designated tracks and bridleways which lead through the dales, with a different view around every corner. No matter whether you are experienced or a novice, there is a wide choice of routes to choose from, each of varying difficulty. Many of the hamlets and villages in the dales can be reached via small unmarked trails through unspoiled and tranquil areas of natural wildlife habitat. If you are considering a cycling holiday there are a number of organisations offering helpful advice on equipment and road safety before you go, and local Tourist Information Centres throughout the region stock a comprehensive range of maps, transport timetables and local weather information.

Grassington is a perfect place to stay as a base as there are plenty of family friendly, less busy routes leading from the village centre. Gentle undulating roads with less traffic and the quiet country lanes of Wharfedale are ideal for young riders. The areas around Reeth, Hawes, Settle and Grassington are slightly busier and have more roads to cycle, but take more experienced and confident cyclists through the heart of the stunning Yorkshire dales countryside, with bustling little villages to explore along the way.
